As we’ve seen in countless YouTube videos, it’s fairly easy for a rider to be injured in an accident. Truth is: motorcyclists are much more vulnerable than drivers particularly because they are the ones absorbing impact in the event of an accident, whereas a driver is protected by air bags.
In order to minimize the risks, riders have always heard from experts that they should make sure they understand what protective gear is for and how to make good use of it.
Until not too long ago, however, motorcycle riders were not as protected from impact as drivers are. Since passenger vehicles are fitted with air bags and other safety features, occupants end up not suffering any major injuries. But riders were never that lucky—until now.
A motorcycle gear company known as Dainese has launched a new solution to this problem.
With safety in mind, Dainese decided to develop air bags for riders. And while that concept sounds crazy, wait until you see how the device works and draw your own conclusions.
While since the 1970s, companies have explored the idea of jackets with air bags, none of the options were entirely functional. It wasn’t until not too long ago that Dainese was able to get the equipment to deploy.
Since the air bag system requires information that is originated from outside the vehicle in order to trigger the device, engineers had a hard time developing the perfect air bag jacket. Now, the Dainese D-air Misano 1000 does just that.
With sensors and GPS technology, the D-air Misano 1000 is able to establish that an accident is in the works promptly enough to send in a signal to the air bag module. With the help of a two-inch air bladder, the rider is cushioned and the impact won’t damage the rider’s vital organs.
While the air bag jacket is expected to cost the rider a good amount of cash, many believe that this is a great development. Once other companies begin developing their own motorcycle air bag systems, the competition should prompt costs to go down.
